Noun [Swedish]

Forms: no-table-tags [table-tags], öring [indefinite, nominative, singular]
Etymology: From Old Swedish øridh, from Old Norse aurriði, from aurr (“sandbank”) (from Proto-Germanic *auraz) + a descendant of Proto-Norse [script needed] (*-ræið-, “travel”), a more broad form of rīþa (“ride”) (from Proto-Germanic *rīdaną). -ridh has transformed into the common suffix -ing in modern Swedish, a modern analysis of the etymology would thus be ör + -ing. The reason for the name is that the trout, like other salmonids, during the lek mating period seeks banks of sand and gravel with weak currents to form a pit in which it can drill its head. Cognate with Icelandic urriði, Danish ørred, Norwegian Bokmål ørret, aure and Norwegian Nynorsk aure.
